Trump Refuses to Apologize for Racist Obama Video
The controversial footage appeared at the conclusion of a clip Trump shared on his Truth Social platform, which promoted his unsubstantiated allegations of electoral manipulation. The disturbing segment superimposed the broadly grinning faces of the Obamas onto simian bodies—reinforcing deeply racist stereotypes historically weaponized against Black Americans—while "The Lion Sleeps Tonight," popularized by Disney's The Lion King, played as accompaniment.
This attack on America's first Black president occurred during Black History Month, a nationally recognized period devoted to celebrating Black American achievements, legacies, and historical contributions.
"Of course I do," Trump responded aboard Air Force One when questioned by journalists about whether he condemns the video's racist elements.
Yet when pressed on issuing an apology, Trump remained unapologetic, shifting responsibility to an unnamed staff member who allegedly uploaded the content without reviewing the portion containing the racist Obama caricatures, insisting he "didn't make a mistake."
"I looked at the first part, and it was really about voter fraud in the machines, how crooked it is, how disgusting it is. Then I gave it to the people to --generally, they look at the whole thing. But I guess somebody didn't, and they posted, and we took it down," he stated.
"Certainly, it was a very strong post in terms of voter fraud. Nobody knew that that was at the end. If they would have looked, they would have seen it, and probably they would have had the sense to take it down," he continued.
Political figures across ideological lines swiftly condemned the post.
"Praying it was fake because it's the most racist thing I've seen out of this White House. The President should remove it," wrote Sen. Tim Scott, the Senate's only Black Republican, on U.S. social platform X.
Trump claimed he contacted Scott to clarify the situation, stating "he understood that 100%."
Sen. Roger Wicker, a Republican representing Mississippi—the state with the highest percentage of Black voters—characterized the post as "totally unacceptable" and demanded Trump "take it down and apologize."
"President Obama and Michelle Obama are brilliant, compassionate and patriotic Americans. They represent the best of this country. Donald Trump is a vile, unhinged and malignant bottom feeder," declared Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, the most senior Black legislator in House history.
"Why are GOP leaders like John Thune continuing to stand by this sick individual? Every single Republican must immediately denounce Donald Trump's disgusting bigotry," he added.
